WFMW: Start a "back to school" tradition

We'll be starting school the first week in September. L knows we'll be homeschooling, and in a way I know he's looking forward to it, but he's also been fussing about not getting to ride the school bus, and stuff like that. (Not that he'd be able to anyway, at age 4.) Isn't it funny the things little kids get excited about....

Anyway, I've been trying to think of ways to get him excited about school, and start the year off with a good attitude. Here's what I've come up with, and I think it would be equally applicable to homeschooled or traditionally schooled kids. (As long as they're young. It might be a hard sell for a middle school kid. LOL )

We're going to have a "back to school party". I bought some inexpensive party supplies in a theme I knew L would like. I'm going to make some coordinating cupcakes, and give him some "gifts." The gifts are going to be stuff I would have been buying anyway, (new crayons, an apron for when we cook, a few new books.) My out of pocket expense on the party supplies, (again, not including stuff I would have bought anyway,) will be minimal, $5-8 bucks, maybe. My son loves parties, as most little ones do. He doesn't require lots of guests, or fancy preparations, just a festive atmosphere.

I told him about the party, and he's looking forward to it. I'm thinking this may become a tradition for us every year, as a way to mark the transition from summer to fall.

  1. Great idea. We are trying to decide what our "not back to school" day activities will be.
