WFMW Top 3 Children's CDs you should own

My husband and I have always been big music fans. We're hoping the kids grow up to be music lovers too.

When I was pregnant, we got a kick out of playing music, and seeing what the babies seemed to "dance" to more. L preferred ACDC and the Rolling Stones, V liked Outkast and Usher. I think we were both proud a while back, when L fell in love with Queen.

We've bought lots of children's CDs over the last few years. Some of them are well, awful.

A few of them are great. I thought I'd share our top picks. All three are well liked by the kids and the parents...even after listening to them on repeat for hours. If you're looking for some new tunes for the family this summer, check them out.

* O Veggie where art thou?- I'm really a sucker for anything Veggie Tales. All their CDs are cute and entertaining, but I think this is my favorite. It's a good way to introduce the kiddos to some old hymns, in an interesting sing along friendly way. I've purchased a number of Christian children's CDS that just about put us all to sleep. This one won't.

*Yo Gabba Gabba- I know. People either love the show, or they hate it. It is a little weird. We love it though, and the CD is no exception. The songs are extremely catchy. The kids start singing and dancing along as soon as they hear the first notes. There are lots of different genres represented on the CD, as it is a mix of the YGG cast and actual bands doing songs for the show. (I'll admit, we went out and got a CD by the Ting Tings, after seeing them on the show. It's also turned us on to the Roots. Did I just admit to taking musical cues from a show for preschoolers? I guess so...) Anyway, my kids LOVE it, and so does my niece, who's 10, and doesn't even watch the show.

*B is for Bob- I just recently won this one in a giveaway, and we really like it. It's not actually kids' songs, per se, but rather remastered versions of old Bob Marley songs that just happen to be kid friendly. It's mellow, without being boring. We've used it at nap time for V, and in the frequently in the car.

  2. We have tons of kids' cds and I agree that most of them are junk. The ones we love are Beethoven's Wig, Barenaked Ladies Snacktime, and all the Classical Kids cds (these are stories plus classical music), Mommy Says No by Asylum Street Spankers (good for slightly older kids, not for everybody), Ratatouille soundtrack. Thansk for your recs, we'll be sure and check them out!

  3. Surprisingly enough we love "Get Set for School," it's part of the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum, and it's got some fairly decent songs on it. My kids ask for it.
I also like the Spare the Rock Spoil the Child podcast, it lets us listen to a wide variety of kids music and find new ones we like.
